Résumé

This internship is included in the wider project Ngombi, whose main objective is to study the history of African populations based on the evolution of their musical instruments. To this end, achieving a realistic sound synthesis of central african harps is an important milestone. This research internship aimed at developping a convincing string model to be coupled with the instrument's body using Udwadia-Kalaba method. A model was developped based on extensive bibliographic researches. Geometric parameters such as diameter and vibrating string length were measured on a corpus of harps. The damping factor was measured on a string bench and analysed by using the ESPRIT method. Theses parameters were then fed to the string modeling in order to achieve the most realistic sound synthesis of a vibrating strings. During experiments, clear evidence was found that the diameter of an african harp's string was very inconsistent throughout the length of a given string. This lead to additionnal study regarding the diameter of a string. Measures using a laser prolometer were conducted to chart strings radius and explanations to this widly varying diameters are proposed. Furthermore, steps were taken to accomodate the string model to a string with non-constant linear mass, and consequences on sound synthesis were investigated.
