Abstract

In the materials synthesis, development and design industries, mixing laws are often used. A good prediction of the behavior laws and effective properties of these materials makes them easier to control. The homogenization method has been tried and tested in many fields of mechanics: elasticity, thermal conductivity, thermoelasticity, plasticity, viscoplasticity, and so on. Although attempts have recently been made to study the effective toughness properties of heterogeneous media [Lebihain et al., 2023; Michel and Suquet, 2022; Hossain et al., 2014], a well-established homogenization procedure for effective properties in brittle fracture mechanics is still lacking to this day. The aim of this work is to propose an efficient numerical method for crack propagation in brittle heterogeneous media, based on a variational formulation and perturbative approaches in fracture mechanics.
