Abstract

For decades, the complete measurement of soil stresses underground has challenged engineers. Current sensor technologies used in geotechnical applications are currently unable to measure all stress components, measuring either normal or shear stresses. Moreover, these sensors were not developed for geotechnical applications. They were originally designed to measure the behavior of homogeneous materials and have been adapted to this purpose. Thus, their design principles were developed without taking into account the complex phenomena of granular mechanics and soil deformation. A sensor able to solve these issues and measure the full stress components in a granular media underground could transform geotechnical applications. By providing real-time data on soil behavior, this new sensor technology could revolutionize geomechanics. As a result, engineers will be able to predict and prevent catastrophic events more accurately, and ensure the safety of structures. Thus, the innovative idea is to design a sensor where granular physics would be included in its conception. This internship will involve further development of the sensor's calibration, improvements of its manufacture and research of a theoretical model.
