Abstract

Large yachts are seen as symbols of luxury and excess. At the beginning of the millennia there were around 2000 superyachts around the world, now there are three times more. According to the ADEME the average French citizen releases 12 tons of CO2 on a yearly basis, whereas a luxury yacht can easily reach more than 3000 tons per year. People started raising concern about this trend, especially on social media with accounts that track superyachts. As an answer to these protests, and in order to align with its sustainable development chart, Generali is designing an environmental score for its yachts. Those who fail to obtain the pass mark will not be insured, and one is not allowed to sail without an insurance. The year before this report, a first version of the score has been created. This project’s objective is to follow this study with further research in order to improve the score’s precision, and even to add new criteria. In order to do that it will be necessary to know how a yacht pollutes, how to estimate its impact with numbers, and how to implement in practice this test.
