Abstract
In this report we examine through numerical simulation the behavior of a single solid spherical particle rising through a newtonian fluid, under the effect of gravity. There have been several papers published on numerical and experimental approaches to studying this problem. These papers sometimes present different results for similar conditions. The purpose of this project is to compare our results with existing literature on the same subject, and discuss any discrepancies between said papers. We will focus our study on several test cases, revolving around two dimensionless parameters characterizing the problem conditions: the Galileo number Ga and the density ratio ρ of the particle relative to the fluid. Said publications have shown that the (ρ, Ga) plane can be divided into separate domains, each characterizing a specific behavior for the rising particle. We will therefore aim to capture these behaviors and discuss our results.
