Abstract

The trainee will first carry out intensive simulations of classical statistical mechanics models in dimension 2, such as the XY model or the clock model, and will recover standard results from the literature. The methods employed will be of the Monte-Carlo type: Metropolis, Swendsen-Wang or event-driven algorithms. These simulations will then be extended to the case where spin length is variable, by analogy with spin 1 quantum particles. The aim will be to characterize the zoology of phase transitions (Kosterlitz-Thouless, 1st order, etc.) These methods will be extented to non equilibrium systems.
