Abstract

The increasing demand for micronewton thruster within the framework of scientic mission underlines the interest of reliable techniques of modelling and characterization of these thrusters. The study of low pressure gas discharge as well as the development of predictive methods are therefore two major points facing the implementation of such propellant systems on satellites. Preliminary results dealing with the possible adaptation of an ion source developed for an electron gun as a micronewton thruster are provided. The study outlines the main aspects of the discharge and the modeling techniques required to simulate it properly.
