Abstract

As the offshore wind energy field grows, floating wind turbine concepts become more and more relevant. These are complex structures which require aerodynamic, hydrodynamic and mechanical knowledge. To be able to provide answers to the industry, MARIN has been involved in global projects like the Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration Continuation (OC4) and has lead its own basin tests on several floaters for wind turbines. However, these experimental tests raise scaling issues, leading to specific aerodynamic behaviors that are not handled by conventional engineering tools used in the wind industry. So the goal of this study is to allow well- known tools, like the certified code FAST, to be used at model scale. This is done through an optimization process that leads to adapted inputs for FAST to deal with these particular situations.
