Abstract

Superconducting magnets are sometimes cooled with liquid helium in its super fluid state. The behaviour of helium in this condition is important to allow the project and optimization of such magnets. This study focus on the study of super fluid helium in channels, in order to comprehend how helium hows in the small gaps created by the wires that compose the superconducting magnets. In order to do so, experiments with channels were made, and numerical simulations using both Fluent and FreeFem++ softwares were conducted. The results show that the theoretical behaviour of the fluid is in accordance with the physical and numerical cases analyzed, however, further study is still needed in order to completely validate the methods.
