Abstract

Since several years, sustained hydrological surveys have been conducted by IEO and CNRS/ IFREMER respectively in the Spanish and French Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the West- ern Mediterranean (WMED). The so-called MOOSE program (France) conducted in the Gulf of Lions and the liguro- provençal sub-basin, combined with the RADMED program (Spain) conducted in the Algerian and Balearic sub-basins give now access to a consistent database which allows an assessment of the WMED intermediate and deep water masses pathways. In particular were studied the formation of the Winter Intermediate Water (WIW) by in- termediate and deep convection and cascading in the Gulf of Lions, its circulation along the Gulf of Valencia, as a part of the Northern Current (NC) and then its presence/absence in the Balearic Current (BC) given the meteorological winter conditions in the Gulf of Lions and finally the various consequences of this inter-annual variability. The internship consisted in 3 weeks on the MOOSE-GE2016 campaign and 8 weeks in the Centro Oceanogràfico de Baleares, Palma de Mallorca thanks to the tight cooperation between Spanish and French oceanographic institutions.
