Abstract

Among some other forces, density gradients are a way to set in motion water bodies, a phenomenon described by thermal wind equations. Across this study, the reliability of these equations is analysed, as their solutions applied to CTD measure- ments (conducted by NIB) are being compared with ADCP measurements in the bay of Koper (Slovenia). It is suggested that a low Rossby number (Ro<1 - advection neglected) is not the only condition of validity of these equations : a moderate or low friction condition (Ekman number<1) is also required. A mass-consistent model is then evaluated for an improved interpolation of data obtained through thermal wind equations. Finally, an analysis of exchange flows in the bay was conducted to check if the Ekman and Kelvin numbers computed were coherent.
