Abstract

First noted by Payne (1962), when a harmonic loading is applied on filled-rubber like materials, dynamic properties show a nonlinear amplitude dependence known as the Payne Effect. Physical interpretations of the phenomenon have been proposed, but none of them has been unanimously supported and modeling the Payne Effect remains a great challenge. The aim of this work is to review experimental observations and mechanical modeling of the Payne Effect. Tests were performed on carbon black filled-rubber like materials in order to characterize their dynamic viscoelastic behavior and explore a few aspects such as: recovery, filler loading and frequency dependencies. Some phenomenological models are discussed and calculations were carried out in order to better understand benefits and limits of each model. The results show that simple models are mechanically unfounded or divergent above the range fitted with experimental data, while mathematically consistent models need further improvement.
