Abstract
This research project aims at studying the different factors that affect motions of buoyant and nonbuoyant microplastics in the Gulf of Naples. Firstly, biofouling, that is to say the alteration of plastic density because of the creation of an algal biofilm around it, is explored thanks to a model developped by Kooi et al. This process provokes a rich vertical distribution of passive particles, depending mainly on plastics characteristics (size and density), but also local seawater temperature and light exposure which influence algae growth. Then, the model is implemented with a time-evolving climatology of the Gulf of Naples. Therefore, more realistic results allow to emphasize that vertical motions of plastics depend on the current season of the year and on the season of insemination. Finally, Lagrangian dispersion of clouds of virtual plastics is studied thanks to a circulation model representing the Gulf of Naples. We describe plastics horizontal trajectories and dispersion thanks to a statistic approach, in function of different cases. In particular, we highlight that plastics are less scattered when they are inseminated far from the coast, under the sea surface or when they have a high vertical negative velocity due to their non-buoyancy.
