Abstract
Lack of physical activity is a cause of death and disease worldwide. There are smartphoneapplications and connected devices, such as watches, that aim to motivate their users to bephysically active on a daily basis. These applications allow users to collect their own data, among other things. In this study, we tried to understand which psychological theories ofmotivation are at the core of these applications, what are the major issues and challengesrelated to the development of these motivational technologies, and how to improve them. Thelast point concerns data visualization, design, and psychological theories. The objective of theinternship was, as far as possible, to propose an innovative idea that would improve persuasivetechnologies. To do this, we decided to link a well-known model of application design, theMETUX model, to the culture of the users, a dimension that is little taken into account inclassical models.
