Abstract
The present study examine the limits of the weakly non-linear theory of internal waves using the MIT General Circulation Model (MITgcm) by simulating three resonant internal gravity waves. These waves were chosen such that the corresponding triad belongs to the Elastic Scattering class. Results from the MITgcm are compared to the weakly non-linear theory predictions, and it is shown that the agreement between the simulations and theory depends on the chosen initial conditions. For initial conditions where the simulations get further from the theoretical predictions, it is shown that the higher order modes corresponding to the higher order in Froude number expansion of the wave equation contaminate lower order modes.
