Abstract
This report presents the results of a three months research internship at the Ponts-Paritech engineering school. The electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique has been investigated in the context of foundation scour. Scour is a soil-structure interaction problem which can lead to bridge failures. Thus monitoring it is essential to avoid dramatic events. The EMI technique has the advantages of being non destructive and cheaper than the other existing methods. During those three months, I developed a model for the electro-mechanical response of piezoelectric ceramic patches made of PIC255. In fact, impedance peaks can be observed in the frequency response and these peaks vary when the environment around the patch changes. Then the objective is to use them to detect scour phenomenon as the response will not be the same in water or in sand. In this internship, I developed a consistent model based on experimental datas for the impedance response of the patch in the void, I analysed the mode which causes the first peak of impedance and I proved that this mode is mainly an in-plane vibration. Finally I worked on the influence of the surrounding environment on the electro-mechanical response of the patch.
