Abstract

Earth’s atmosphere and the oceans are composed of stratified flows. These fluids are distributed in layers where less dense fluids are in stable equilibrium above denser ones. During this 10-weeks internship at the LadHyX laboratory, I studied the behaviour of a two-dimensional stratified turbulent flow. The objective was to analyse the formation mechanism of this layered structure using numerical simulations subjected to constant forcing at small scales. The simulation device highlights the role of internal gravity waves in the formation of jets contained in the layers of the fluid. The obtained structures are fine and located at the positions of the forcing. The resonance of these waves allows the layers to transit to a second regime composed of thicker and more intense jets. However, resonance does not always occur. In this case, the layers break up and return to vortex structures characteristic of the initial state at the forcing level.
