Abstract

This project will investigate a new numerical method for solving the equations of motion of the atmosphere, using an optimal transport formulation. The aim is to produce and analyse results obtained from a 2-D model showing the formation of fronts within the atmosphere. To do this, we will use new mathematical concepts that underpin the method, such as the semi-geostrophic equations, which are a model of frontogenesis in atmospheric science. As a result of new advances in the field of numerical optimal transport, discrete approximations on large scales are used here: entropic optimal transport and the Sinkhorn aglorithm will be studied. We will use the GeomLoss library developed by Jean Feydy, built on top of Torch. We will also use a GPU machine to produce the results, by connecting to the Imperial College London cluster.
