Abstract
With climate change, droughts will become more frequent and intense. Additionally, in recent years, the term"flash droughts" has been used to describe particularly intense droughts that develop extremely rapidly. It’s also suggested that these flash droughts are partly triggered by climate change. To detect and characterize them, climatology employs an index called the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The objective of thiswork, which remains unfinished, is to program this index in Python. Then, based on various definitions of flash droughts from different scientific papers, the aimis to detect them in Sicily. Subsequently,Mann-Kendall statistical tests can be conducted to observe trends over the last 40 years in terms of the intensity and duration of these flash droughts.
