Abstract

This research internship report investigates the lithiation process of an AlSi10Mg alloy, which is manufactured using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), and explores its potential as an anodic material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Driven by the in- creasing demand for high-performance energy storage systems, this study evaluates whether AlSi10Mg—a material characterized by its aluminum and silicon content, which have both high storage capacity —could provide an attractive alternative to traditional graphite anodes. The internship represents an initial step toward under- standing the effects and mechanisms of lithiation on this alloy, exploring its viability for energy storage applications. The report outlines the methodology for preparing and lithiating samples in both as-built and heat-treated states, employing advanced techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nanoindentation to assess the microstructural and mechanical changes induced by electrochemical lithiation.
